ChatGPT: The Swiss Army Knife of AI Marketing Tools

Screenshot of OpenAI's ChatGPT homescreen

ChatGPT needs no introduction. B2B marketers looking to leverage artificial intelligence should start with ChatGPT.

I’ve used it for over a year now, steadily increasing my use, especially for tasks like content writing and editing. But it can do much more, like analyzing data sets, refining marketing strategy, brainstorming campaign ideas, and other B2B marketing tasks.

However, using ChatGPT is like painting on a blank canvas: it can be overwhelming to get started. Also, the output is only as good as the input, or the prompts you give it.

As Taylor Scher, SEO Consultant for B2B SaaS companies, recommends: “break down your outline and feed ChatGPT your headers one at a time. Give it explicit instructions for each section, and make sure it goes heavy on detail. The problem with Chat(GPT) is that it basically summarizes topics without providing much in-depth info (which negatively impacts your content since you’re not focusing on information gain score). You have to keep tweaking chat until it gives you detailed/helpful content and not the generic content it produces on its own.”

Here’s a breakdown of what makes ChatGPT stand out for me:

Pros:

  • Versatility: It’s my “Swiss Army knife” for marketing, adept at handling various tasks with ease
  • Cost-effectiveness: ChatGPT provides a lot of value for the price (I mean, $20/month for ChatGPT 4 is as good as it gets IMO)
  • Customization: The ability to prompt ChatGPT to format the output makes it easy to copy and paste, whether it’s copy or code, which saves a lot of time.
  • Popularity: The widespread adoption of ChatGPT will lead to more resources for OpenAI to continnually develop the tool, and the large user base will result in user-generated content on how to write the best prompts and get the most from ChatGPT.

Cons:

  • “Prompt block”: Getting the best results does require a bit of a learning curve, particularly in crafting effective prompts, which can be a challenge at times if you’re not sure what to write
  • Content accuracy: While it’s a powerful tool, it does come with a warning that the AI-generated content is not always accurate, sometimes “hallucinating”
  • Overuses certain words and phrases: Many ChatGPT-written phrases, like, “it’s important to note”, “in world of today’s dynamic market”, “we’ll delve into” are a few examples of the telltale signs of ChatGPT writing

More Pros and Cons from Stefano Mandola – Senior Performance Marketing Manager @ Localyze

Stefano uses ChatGPT on a daily basis. Here’s his take:

  • Pros: gives inspiration and something to use as a starting point, helps translate when you need content in other languages, helps find errors and typos, it’s quick and can unlock situations where you got stuck
  • Cons: data is not up to date if you don’t have a subscription plan, results can sometimes be very basic if you don’t spend time in creating the right prompt and setting up a context, it doesn’t have any search volume data
  • Benefits: I manage to create marketing ads much quicker than before. Any research is done in seconds.
  • Things to consider before trying/buying: budget allocation, the actual usage (can the free version also do the same and how much would you use the paid features?). Can it replace other tools you use and help you save money? How much time does it help you save?

Pricing: Try it for Free or get ChatGPT Plus with GPT-4, starting at $20/month.

Grammarly: The Must-Have AI Tool For Any B2B Marketer

demo of gGammarly editing and generative ai

Grammarly has evolved from a simple grammar checker to one of the best AI writing tools. It analyzes content for grammar and syntax improvements, offering suggestions in various apps.

A key strength is the ability to enhance writing across multiple platforms, including popular apps and browsers like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Gmail, and Chrome.

I’ve used Grammarly since 2018 and Grammarly Premium since 2021, and it’s seamlessly become part of my online writing. It’s hard to imagine just how much work Grammarly does for you until it reminds you how many total words it analyzes for you. For me, it’s analyzed 34,631,845 total words since Sep 23, 2018, identifying 97,934 errors all-time at a cost of less than half a penny per identified error. That’s incredible value.

Yet, Grammarly’s autocorrect feature sometimes gets it wrong, inadvertently alters names or specialized terms, occasionally missing the context of the content. Some users also find Grammarly’s user interface confusing, which can lead to workflow disruptions (though I disagree with that point of view.) If anything, If anything, I’ve found Grammarly’s Chrome extension to be a tad buggy and occasionally not trigger the app, making me delude myself that I’m writing error-free, only to be humbled when Grammarly kicks in again or I double-check in the Grammarly app.

Despite these challenges, I find Grammarly to be a must-have tool for any B2B marketer.

I’m not alone. Ashley R. Cummings, Freelance writer for Commerce, Retail, and Marketing SaaS, also told me, “…the tool no writer can live without–Grammarly. Grammarly is an easy and affordable way to get an extra set of eyes on your content. You definitely have to double-check its suggestions but it usually won’t lead you astray.”

Key features:

  • AI tool for analyzing content for grammar and syntax improvements
  • Enhances writing across multiple platforms including Microsoft Word, Gmail, and Chrome

Pros:

  • Analyzes content for grammar and syntax improvements
  • Offers insights on engaging readers and guidance on word choice

Cons:

  • Some suggestions are best ignored
  • The Chrome app doesn’t always work

Price: Get started with the Free plan, which has the key features to write without mistakes, see your writing tone, and generate text with up to 100 monthly AI prompts.

Jasper: The B2B Marketers’ AI Content Creation Assistant

Jasper's AI writing assistant homepage

Jasper has quickly become the leading AI content creation assistant.

I’ve been using Jasper for over a year, and my favorite part of it is the templates. One of the hardest parts about starting with generative AI is figuring out the right prompt, or more often, the right series of prompts.

Jasper provides dozens of templates to help make it easy for generative AI newbies to get the right output quickly, from social media posts to email marketing campaigns. Jasper can be leverage artificial intelligence throughout the content creation process.

screenshot of jasper ai templates

Despite Jasper’s intuitive interface and templatized content creation tools, I found myself turning more and more to ChatGPT (for others, could be Bard or Gemini) to fully control the prompts that were guiding the output and see if it could match the output with its lower cost.

However, if I test how Jasper compares to ChatGPT for writing social media ad copy, Jasper probably has the edge (see examples below)

making social media ads in jasper ai

In my opinion, Jasper’s output has the edge because it would require slightly less editing. Also, the ChatGPT output likely would have been worse had I not started with Jasper and its guided questions to write a better prompt.

I recommend trying Jasper vs ChatGPT for a specific marketing task to see how the output compares. For many, Jasper will likely be one of the best content marketing tools to add to their marketing tech stack.

Pros:

  • Dozens of templates on multiple marketing use cases make it easy to get started with generative AI for email, social media, and blog posts, among others.
  • Allows setting custom tone of voice to match brand stylings
  • Image AI generation is a nice bonus for content creators

Cons:

  • General purpose Generative AI tools like ChatGPT provide some similar functionality at a lower price, and might suffice for those willing and able to prompt on a “blank canvas”
  • Manual editing is sometimes needed to perfect industry-specific language

Price: Starting at $39/month for the Creator plan. Try it out on a free 7-day trial.

Surfer SEO: AI Writing Assistant and On Page SEO Optimization In One

SurferSEO is an AI content generation tool designed to help you create SEO optimized content.

I’ve been experimenting with SurferSEO for blog writing (the outline and copy for this post were made in it, though it required almost a full rewrite to get it to this point). I like how it combines an AI writing assistant with on-page SEO optimization with an easy-to-use:

  • Real-time Content Editor
  • Keyword Research tool that simplifies the process of creating search engine-friendly copy
  • AI writer that provides the structure and language needed for an SEO optimized post

The competitive pricing offers a lot of value for the features provided.

However, the AI copy can sometimes lean too heavily on SEO, resulting in irrelevant or jargon-y copy. Also, the tool sometimes provides irrelevant suggestions, like internal linking and adding keywords out of context. Despite these minor drawbacks, my overall experience with Surfer SEO has mainly been positive, and I would highly recommend any content marketer try it out.

Pros:

  • Great UI for easy use and improved on-page SEO of content
  • AI writer provides the post structure with the words, heading, paragraphs and images needed for an SEO-optimized post
  • Competitive, affordable pricing for SEO-optimized content creation

Cons:

  • AI copy can sometimes include irrelevant or fluffy copy, or over-optimize a post for search engines, which can backfire with Google if the content doesn’t have a human touch.
  • AI images tend to lack realism and look and feel like an AI image
  • Sometimes, it provides irrelevant suggestions, like internal linking and adding keywords out of context

Price: Starting at $69/month for the Essential plan. Try it out on a free 7-day trial.

AdCreative.ai: The Digital Marketers’ AI Ad Assistant

Screenshot of AI-generated ad strategies in AdCreative.ai

AdCreative.ai distinguishes itself among AI tools with its capability to craft advertising strategies, ad creatives, copy, and audiences.

I really like the Ad Package, a key feature that integrates strategy, creatives, audiences, and text, optimized for conversions in one centralized platform. Utilizing advanced AI, it aims to improve advertising efficiency and save time.

I was pleasantly surprised by the AI conversion-focused suggested strategies, which acted like a brainstorming prompt on messages and call-to-actions.

I also didn’t expect dozens of creative options and 16 text options based on different messaging frameworks, like the PAIS Formula: Problem-Agitate-Invalidate-Solve. It does a great job writing Google ads, Facebook ad headlines, and more.

However, the creatives and audience outputs aren’t as strong as the ad copy output.

Also, I found there to be a disconnect between AdCreative.ai ad conversion score and its Creative AI score, as the creative I selected had a 100/100 conversion score but only a 65/100 Creative AI performance score, leaving me unsure which score to focus on when making ad decisions.

Despite these issues, AdCreative.ai is a handy, new-ish tool for marketers who make digital ads.

Key features:

  • AI tool for creating personalized and efficient advertising strategies, creatives, copy, and audiences
  • Access to over 100 million stock images at no additional cost

Pros:

  • Customizable designs and AI-scored ads
  • Integration capabilities enhance the AI’s machine-learning model
  • Ad inspiration gallery, organized in 40 categories, with many ads in each (E.g. the SaaS category has 11,200 ads)
  • Strong variety of ad copy based on multiple copywriting frameworks
  • Easy to toggle between brands in one account, making it scaleable to freelancers and agencies who make ads for multiple brands

Cons:

  • Creative and audience output is weaker than ad copy out
  • Multiple scoring types can contradict and confuse

Price: Try it for free on a 7-day trial with 10 free credits. The Startups Plan starts at $15/month.

HubSpot AI: The All-In-One Platform for Marketing Automation Adds Artificial Intelligence

HubSpot's Campaign Assistant can save time making marketing campaign

HubSpot AI marketing products aim to cover a wide range of use cases.

Never one for a specific point solution, HubSpot’s approach to AI marketing tooling is the same, aligning with their product vision to be an all-in-one marketing and sales platform.

HubSpot AI products include:

  • Campaign Assistant: An AI-powered tool that simplifies the creation of copy for landing pages, emails, or ads.
  • AI-Powered CRM: A robust platform that integrates AI to streamline processes across sales, marketing, and service teams, featuring tools like ChatSpot, enriched business data, and the Campaign Assistant.
  • AI Website Generator: A no-code solution for quickly building websites, offering features like custom domain connections and CRM integration.
  • AI Content Writer: This tool aids in generating content for websites and marketing campaigns, including blog writing and paragraph rewriting.
  • AI for WordPress: Enhances the HubSpot WordPress plugin with AI-generated content, emails, and more, aimed at growing businesses effectively.

Additionally, HubSpot provides a range of free and premium AI tools, including an AI Email Writer, Blog Writer, Chatbot Builder, and advanced options like Conversation Intelligence and Social Caption Generator, all designed to optimize marketing efforts and improve efficiency.

Of the HubSpot AI tools that I tried, Campaign Assistant had the most promise. It can help take a campaign idea and build out landing pages, emails, ads, and social posts, all at the click of a few buttons to help marketing teams save time.

However, the output is quite basic — the campaign messaging is built on three main points — and the assets still require a branding and design touch. It’d also be great to see UTM tracking linking included in the Campaign Assistant.

I find HubSpot’s simplest AI tools, like its Email Writer, are currently the most useful as they’re integrated into your email creation workflow and require little to no change.

However, I found getting a handle on all the features of HubSpot AI to have a steeper learning curve than with point AI marketing solutions.

Also, as these HubSpot AI features are among the many built and maintained by them, HubSpot might put less focus on developing them compared to standalone AI offerings that need their key features of AI to deliver value.

That said, there’s a lot of potential for HubSpot to enable its customers to leverage their customer data in their HubSpot CRM and Marketing Automation Platform in tandem with AI.

Imagine, for example, what the HubSpot AI email writer could do once it’s tied to your HubSpot customer data and email content and performance.

Pros:

  • For HubSpot Marketing Hub customers, extend your marketing automation platform’s functionality without adding more tools to your zmarketing tech stack
  • Get started for free with most of them
  • Jack of all trades, i.e. it offers multiple AI tools for marketers

Cons:

  • Relatively steep learning curve
  • AI tools are one of the many built and maintained by HubSpot, which might affect its focus on AI solution development
  • Master of none, i.e. doesn’t seem to currently have an AI marketing solution that would be best-in-class as a standalone product

Price: HubSpot offers free marketing tools to get started. Pricing scales by product, number of contacts and other variables.

Keyplay: The Ideal Account List Building Tool With AI

Keyplay's AI-powered target account list builder and scorer

Keyplay is an AI-powered target account list builder and scorer.

This AI-powered tool enables sales and marketing professionals to find their Ideal Customer Profile (ICP), prioritize their target audience list, and track account signals for targeted marketing efforts.

The platform’s integration with PeerSignal research provides comprehensive support for Go-to-Market (GTM) strategies.

Keyplay uses AI to build lookalike audiences based on a customer's top accounts

I’ve been using Keyplay for almost two years, and it’s now integral to my account list-building process. It’s the best tool I’ve found for accurately building a list of SaaS target accounts.

Also, I love how Keyplay provides custom account signals that provide a deeper level of data that raises each account’s relevance on our lists.

Nevertheless, Keyplay is still an early-stage company that is building out its functionality. For example, there was no Salesforce integration when I started with it, and their HubSpot integration is fairly new. Despite the slightly underdeveloped aspects of some parts of Keyplay, I highly recommend any B2B marketer needing to build better target account lists to consider it.

Key Features:

  • AI tool for finding the Ideal Customer Profile (ICP), prioritizing the market, and tracking account signals
  • Custom account scoring model provides the right amount of detail, control, and accuracy
  • Integration with PeerSignal research for support in Go-to-Market (GTM) strategies

Pros:

  • Best-in-class target Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) account list builder based on firmographics
  • Accurate account information on SaaS companies
  • Custom account scoring model is flexible, easy to understand, and is back-tested by the Keyplay team against your data to ensure accuracy

Cons:

  • Lacks contact data and buyer intent signals
  • Some Keyplay data points are only available through CSV export, not in the app interface

Price: Explore their sample set data and get a free preview of 25 accounts. The Startup plan starts at $4k/year for up to 5,000 accounts and the Growth plan is $12k/year for up to 50,000 accounts.

Seamless.AI: The AI Tool for B2B Leads

Screenshot of Seamless.ai's expanded contact and company information leveraging AI

Seamless.AI is an AI-powered sales prospecting software. It offers company and contact data to help sellers and marketers reach more prospects.

As a B2B marketer, I put Seamless.ai’s AI writer to the test myself. All I had to do was fill out 6 fields in an “About Me” setup to help Seamless customize the message to my needs, pick a message template, and hit write.

In two minutes, Seamless wrote me a pretty solid LinkedIn follow-up message (see the screenshot below.)

Screenshot of Seamless.ai's custom AI writer's LinkedIn follow up message.

I see potential for Marketing and Sales team to leverage its custom AI script writer to combine the contact data in Seamless with an AI writing assistant to write better and faster outreach messages.

However, Seamless is, first and foremost, a tool for Sales, so the Marketing use case is relatively limited. However, if your Sales team uses Seamless, Marketers could also leverage it.

Key Features:

  • Uses AI for real-time contact data verification to aids in efficiently connecting with ideal customers
  • Provides AI recommendations to continuously find prospective buyers so you can proactively reach out to build pipelines and close more deals

Pros:

  • Leverages AI to provide accurate and hard-to-find contact information
  • Native AI writing assistance with Sales prospecting specific templates

Cons:

  • AI writer credits are limited to 5 before needing to upgrade.

Price: Try the Free plan to get 50 credits for contacts and company data and 5 AI write credits. The Basic plan starts at $147/month.

Synthesia: The AI Video Generator for Efficient Video Content Creation

Synthesia is an AI video generation tool well-suited for those with limited video editing skills.

You simply input a script and select an avatar to create a video, making it ideal for converting documents into engaging video content without the need for filming.

The AI avatars are lifelike relative to similar tools on the market, and the ability to upload audio clips for AI presenters were among the standout features for me.

On the other hand, the inability of the AI avatars to fully mimic human behaviour could impact the perceived authenticity of one’s video content.

That said, the overall benefits of Synthesia, such as its ability to reduce production costs and quickly create marketing, explainer, and educational contents, may outweigh the limitations for many creating content in video form.

Key features:

  • AI platform for creating engaging videos with lifelike avatars
  • Text-to-video, multi-language support, and customizable text and images
  • Custom avatar designed to look and sound like you

Pros:

  • Ideal for converting documents into engaging video content without filming
  • Lifelike AI avatars with improved gestures
  • Ability to upload audio clips for AI presenters

Cons:

  • AI avatars cannot wholly replicate human naturalness
  • Limited expressiveness and customization options

Price: Starting at $22/month for the Starter plan, which includes 1 editor & 3 guests, 120 minutes of video/year, and 70+ AI avatars.

HeyGen: The AI Video Personalization Tool for Sales and Marketing Email Campaigns

HeyGen is an AI video generation tool. In my testing of HeyGen, I found the use case with the best utility is personalized videos for sales outreach with AI video.

I like how there’s a template to show a contact’s website in an AI-generated video outreach message.

HeyGen’s template just needs you to add the prospect’s website URL, record one video test, and write the outreach message with custom variables, to scale outreach with personalized AI-assisted video messages.

Screenshot of HeyGen templated for personalized video outreach.

I’ve manually run video message outreach campaigns with Sales teams using this website-scrolling in the background approach. It’s an effective way to get engagement, but it can be time-consuming and cause burnout.

HeyGen’s platform looks ready to replace the manual approach with little to no difference to the recipient. But you’ve got to see it and hear it to believe it.

So, here’s an example of a personalized video outreach project message I made using HeyGen. In the video, you’ll see and hear the same message personalized to three different recipients.

Note that I only needed to make a 15-second video recording to feed HeyGen enough data about my voice to create these videos. That means it’s using AI to mimic my voice to say each name, and most else in the message.

Also, note that I do speak in a relatively monotone voice, so this does really sound like me. If there’s room for improvement, it might be in enhancing the flow or pace.

While I find the main AI avatar use cases left me wanting, I found HeyGen’s personalized video outreach to be a potential dream tool for any marketer focused on enabling sales with personalized outreach using video messages at scale.

Key features:

  • AI tool for enhancing customer engagement through personalized B2B marketing campaigns
  • AI Email Writer tool for creating tailored sales outreach emails using ai email marketing tools

Pros:

  • Personalized videos based on a short 15-second video clip of your own create lifelike video outreach messages personalized with custom variables such as company URL, name, etc.
  • Enhances customer engagement through B2B marketing campaigns
  • Recognizes nuanced customer preferences for effective targeting

Cons:

  • Limited custom variables on the personalized videos
  • Creating a life-like AI Avatar is challenging, especially matching a believable-sounding voice for the avatar

Price: $24/month for the Creator plan. Try it on the Free plan with no credit card needed and get 1 Free Credit, 1 Seat, 120+ Public Avatars, and 300+ Voices.

Navigating the AI Marketing Tool Landscape

Using AI marketing tools in B2B marketing currently presents a high-risk, high-reward proposition. These tools are still at the bleeding edge and are used by tech enthusiasts and innovators, meaning there’s a real opportunity to gain a competitive advantage by being an early adopter of AI powered tools, before the majority uses them.

However, remember that it’s still the early innings of AI software marketing tools, and there are still many key features, integration capabilities, and other matters to iron out. But if you’re willing to work through some of these issues, you can find a major competitive advantage in your marketing.

Matching AI Marketing Tools to Your Business Needs

Aligning the best AI marketing tools with specific business needs is crucial for securing optimal results. Whether your business needs revolve around content creation, SEO optimization, or customer segmentation, there are AI tools that can fulfill these requirements effectively.

For example, Content Marketer should evaluate AI content creation tools not only for their time-saving features but also for how they can enhance the strategic aspects of content planning and execution to find the right balance between automation efficiency and human creativity. Similarly, Growth Marketers should evaluate AI-powered lead generation tools to enhance personalization by tailoring marketing communications and product recommendations using buyer behavior data.

Yet, the success of these AI tools hinges on your ability to use your own intelligence to know when and how much to revise the output from artificial intelligence.

Budgeting for AI Marketing Innovations

The decision to invest in AI marketing tools can range from a low-consideration decision to try a free tool to a high-consideration purchase decision that necessitates careful analysis of costs and potential long-term ROI.

While the price of AI marketing tools obviously varies, here are a few examples of the most popular pricing packages of some of the tools to show the range:

  • Grammarly’s Premium plan starts at $12/month for 1,000 AI prompts to generate text
  • Jasper’s Pro plan starts at $59/month for 1 seat, 3 brand voices, and 10 knowledge assets.
  • AdCreative.ai’s Professional plan starts $141/month for 5 brands
  • Keyplay’s Growth plan is $1,000k/month for 50,000 tracked accounts

Many AI marketing software solutions offer a free trial or a monthly contract, making it easier to try before investing heavily in any solution. As with any business software purchase decisions, seek concrete, measurable benefits through case studies and third-party reviews to complement your own experience with the tool during your free trial.

Summary

AI marketing tools for B2B marketing are popping up left, right, and centre, catering to various needs like content creation, SEO optimization, ad personalization, lead generation, and account list building. These tools can provide a competitive edge, enabling businesses to automate tasks, streamline workflows, enhance strategies, and, ultimately, drive profitable growth.

As the use of AI in marketing continues to grow, buyers should select tools that align with their specific needs, provide high-quality data for effective results, and avoid the hype around popular tools that won’t solve a real need for you.

The process of harnessing the power of AI for B2B marketing is both daunting and exciting, filled with opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and growth.
