What is Loom?

Think of every meeting you’ve been in that could have been avoided with a short explanation up front, or with a quick, asynchronous Q&A.

That’s where Loom can save the day. It’s an amazingly simple tool that you can use to create and share video messages for work communication effortlessly.

I’ve used Loom for 3+ years now in my role as a B2B software marketer and have loved being able to record brief videos of my screen, camera, or both, record it, and then easily share it.

I find this tool has been especially useful for internal comms with teammates, colleagues and really any stakeholder who I communicate with online, particularly via email and Slack. It could also be used for presentation, tutorials, and other video communication uses.

It enhances workplace interaction and collaboration by offering a more personal touch than traditional text-based communication.

Who is Loom best suited for?

I think Loom is best suited for professionals who frequently communicate online, particularly ones in remote or hybrid work environments, and even more so the ones who dislike meetings more than average.

I gather that it’s ideal for team leaders, project managers, educators, customer support representatives, and anyone else who relies on clear, concise communication.

In my view, Loom can enhance collaboration, provide clear instructions, and facilitate feedback, making it a valuable tool for businesses, educational institutions, and various organizations seeking a more engaging alternative to traditional text-based (written) communication.

I’ve used Loom for as a Marketer for internal communication and team alignment.

In my experience, here’s my honest take on the pros and cons of Loom:

Pros:

  1. Easy and efficient video recording: I’ve found Loom is super easy to quickly record and share videos, making it a convenient tool for creating sharing information, which helps reduce the need for a lot of meetings.
  2. Collaboration features: One of my favourite features of Loom is one of the simplest: the ability for viewers to provide feedback to video creators by adding time-stamped emojis and adding comments.
  3. Accessibility: Loom offers a cloud-based platform, allowing users to access their videos from anywhere with an internet connection, making it convenient for remote work or on-the-go access.

Cons:

  1. Limited editing capabilities: Like any tool that’s easy-to-use, the drawback is usually that it’s features are relatively basic compared to comparable tools, which is the case with Loom’s video editing video editing software, limiting the ability to make advanced edits or add complex effects.
  2. Limited storage capacity: The free version of Loom has limited storage capacity — up to 25 videos, no longer than 5 minutes each, in my experience — which may require users to upgrade to a paid plan or regularly delete old videos to free up space.
  3. Privacy concerns: I’ve noticed other users note that because Loom stores videos on its cloud-based platform, there may be privacy concerns regarding the security and confidentiality of sensitive or proprietary information shared through videos.

  • Starter (Free): Up to 25 videos per person, 5 min/video, including screen recording, transcriptions, privacy controls, viewer insights, and team workspace.
  • Business ($12.50/creator/month, billed annually): Unlimited videos and length, all Starter features plus removal of Loom branding, video embedding, password protection, and more.
  • Enterprise (Custom pricing): Includes all Business features, advanced security like SSO, custom data policies, and Salesforce integration.
  • Loom AI Add-on ($4/creator/month, annually): Offers auto titles, summaries, chapters, task generation, and more.

In my opinion, what sets Loom apart from its competition is its focus on easily creating, editing, and sending videos for internal communications. Some tools have more heavy-duty editing features, while others do more for external communications to prospects and customers, but Loom’s my top recommendation for video communication with colleagues, peers, and other internal stakeholders.
